How to Organise Your Home Before a Holiday

Booking a holiday is an exciting time. However, in the lead up to it, there are lots of things that need to be taken care of. Here at We Buy Any House, we have compiled our tips on how to organise your home before a holiday.

Do a General Tidy Up

Before you leave to go on holiday, it’s a good idea to do a general tidy-up of your home, so that when you come back from holiday, the cleanliness of your home is one less thing for you to do. Before you go, there are a couple of tasks to complete which will be a great help:

  • Vacuum or sweep the house. It’s especially important to do this around the corners and crooks of your house, such as the coffee table and under your sofas. It’s important to clean the floors anywhere you eat, as you don’t want crumbs or leftover bits of food to attract unwanted insects.
  • Emptying the bins is especially important as you don’t want to return off your holiday to a horrid smell that’s protruding through your home.
  • Wipe down all your surfaces. For similar reasons to why it’s important to clean your floors, you don’t want there to be any food residue on your surfaces that could attract any unwanted insects.

Empty Your Fridge

In the weeks leading up to your holiday, it’s a good idea to stop doing any food shops and just begin using the food in your fridge. This is because ideally, you don’t want there to be any fresh food left over in your fridge as it will more than likely go off during your holiday. By eating what you can, you won’t need to put everything into the bin. Another good idea is to stock up on tinned foods, so that when you come back from your holiday, the fridge isn’t completely empty.

Turn Off Your Appliances

Before you go on holiday, it’s a good idea to turn off all your appliances. Not only will this help save your money on your electricity bills, but it’s also better for the environment to not have things on standby. Additionally, in the case of bad weather while you are away, your appliances won’t face any damage caused by the bad weather.

Arrange Cover for Your Pets and Plants

If you have a pet, then it’s critical that you find alternative care for your animal while you are away. It’s against the law to leave your animal unattended for long periods of time, and you can face heavy prosecutions from law enforcement and animal protection services. Arrange for a friend or relative to take care of your pet, or if you want to keep them at home, have a trusted neighbour come and look after them. The same advice stands for your plants if they can’t go for prolonged periods of time.
